Strokestown Park
Strokestown Park is one of the major attraction in the area and you can spend lovely time here. The place is just great for all kind of tourists – families, groups or individuals. The different part of Strokestown Park are named: The Famine Museum, The House and Strokestown Park Walled Gardens.
If you feel hungry there is also a lovely place to eat – “Restaurant at Strokestown”, located in a building from the 17th century, where you can try some home baked treats or you can have a light meal with a drink in the Cafe. Strokestown Park House was the former home of the Packenham Mahon family.
In 1979 the House, along with the estate, was acquired by a local company. The company decided to preserve the house because of its historical value. The House was faithfully restored. It is unique in that it retains its original furnishings and professionally guided tours allow visitors to browse freely through the stately surroundings. It contains a remarkable storage of documents, related to the 20th century, including: articles, accounts, rentals, correspondence, maps, plans, press cuttings, photographs, etc.
Occasionally, public lectures are held in the house, regarding the history of Strokestown. The splendid Walled Gardens have been resorted too. H. Packenham was a keen gardener and during his peregrinations he collected many seeds from different places. Today the Gardens are still home to many exotic plants from around the world.
